SATURDAY, JANUARY 11, 2020 IN ABERDEENHuman trafficking is one of the fastest-growing crimes in the United States, and many children, teens and young adults unknowingly put themselves at increased risk in relationships that they form in person and online. According to the Human Trafficking Hotline [1], there were 287 cases of human trafficking in North Carolina in 2018, making our state 6th in the nation in human trafficking cases [2]. Of those cases, 65% were women and 19% were minors. Sadly, Moore County is far from immune to this issue, with nearby major interstates, military bases, multiple major tourist events, and a large agricultural industry all adding to the risk.
The Junior League of Moore County has partnered with Friend to Friend to help keep Moore County’s youth safe by providing education, awareness, and skills crucial for combatting human trafficking in our community. The event focuses both on helping teens learn to protect themselves and their friends, and helping parents/guardians understand the risk factors, warning signs, and the best ways to intervene. Both adults and children will walk away with a better understanding of the tactics and methods of traffickers, risk factors to be aware of, and preventative measures and resources that offer protection and support. Teens will also have an opportunity to learn basic self-defense moves by a local instructor to build confidence in their physical safety. Please dress comfortably for the day! Junior League of Moore County has partnered with Friend to Friend to host the Bodies are not Commodities event in January during Human Trafficking Awareness Month. Friend to Friend is committed to offering prevention, intervention, and holistic recovery services and support for domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking victims. Questions?
