UPCOMING LBDI EVENTS |
Mark your calendars for the Junior League of Moore County's Little Black Dress Initiative on October 1st - 7th! The Little Black Dress Initiative (LBDI) is a social media-driven fundraising campaign that uses the iconic ‘little black dress’ to raise awareness about poverty in Moore County. Our League participants wear one little black dress during our campaign and are encouraged to harness the power of their social media platforms to drive online donations. The funds raised support the work and mission of the Junior League: promoting voluntary service, developing the potential of women and improving the community.
The LBDI started in 2014 by the Junior League of London, who during London Fashion week, wore the same black dress to work, parties, dinners and events to raise funds and increase awareness of poverty in the city. The campaign was such a huge success, the group called on Junior League chapters across the world to host their own LBDIs throughout the year. Follow along during our campaign from October 1st - 7th on social media using the hashtags #LBDI and #JLMCNC. Funds raised will go directly to JLMC's effort to provide basic needs like, food, household essentials, and clothing to individuals in Moore County.
Who can participate?
The Little Black Dress Initiative is open to all! You don't need to be a JLMC member or resident of Moore County to participate. Who benefits from the proceeds? Proceeds from the event will support ongoing projects with our community partners in Moore County - Friend to Friend, North Moore High School, and Sandhills Boys & Girls Club to name a few. In addition, funds will support JLMC sponsored Done-in-a-Day quick impact projects within the county. What is the Little Black Dress Initiative (LBDI)?
LBDI is a fundraising campaign created by The Junior League to raise awareness around poverty and the restrictions poverty places on choices, opportunities, and access to resources. Traditionally, league members wear one black dress for five consecutive days, in an effort to spark conversations and awareness about poverty and related issues. In 2019, the Junior League of Moore County put our own spin on LBDI by turning it into a fun run. The following year, we made LBDI a month long MOVEment and raised $11,000! This year we are creating a two week campaign, including three events to support LBDI. Why is this initiative important here? Moore County is famous for its golf courses, horse farms, and local shopping. It offers country living, with all the pleasures of a resort community. However, 11.3% of the population lives below the poverty line. The largest demographic living in poverty are females. The Junior League of Moore County partners with organizations, like Friend to Friend and TambraPlace, to serve women in need of shelter and other services. Funds raised for this initiative will also support food insecurity and other basic needs to individuals in Moore County. |
